Safer Tracks. Safer Journeys.

Around the world railways are used every day to transport millions of people and tonnes of cargo. Due to the nature of the rail industry it’s very important that strict health and safety regulations are in place. Increasingly, railway operators are opting to conduct drug and alcohol testing on all staff, not just safety-critical roles.

Rail staff have a responsibility to ensure the safe journey of all passengers and cargo. It is therefore unacceptable for any member of staff to be at work impaired, or suffering from the effects of drug and/or alcohol use.

Why Test?

Within the rail industry in the UK it is an offence for rail employees to carry out, and for railway employers to allow employees to carry out, safety-critical work while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. This legislation is set out in section 27 of the Transport and Works Act 1992, and is enforced by the British Transport Police.

Due to this legislation, rail operators must be proactive when it comes to detecting drug and alcohol misuse.
